Bierzerkers, a game of BREWtal team-based online melee combat and unhealthy amounts of beer puns, is headed for Steam Early Access on July 9.

Players choose from different classes as they clash in the game’s Nordic-inspired battle arenas of Brewhalla. Concept art seems to hint at four classes thus far: a mallet-wielding heavy, a ranged female archer, a slinky, dagger-tossing rogue, and the standard sword-and-shield warrior, complete with a horned helmet. Players can unlock cosmetic items as they progress through the rankings.

Developed in Unreal Engine 4, Bierzerkers’ vibrant visuals seem to channel a bit of the cartoony art style and humor of Valve’s Team Fortress 2. For example, the BEERded Vikings often take time out for a keg stand. Compounded with its references to Conan: The Barbarian and Clerks, and it’s easy to see Bierzerkers rarely takes itself seriously.

Though a brand new independent developer, Shield Break Studios features developers hailing from some of gaming’s most popular multiplayer titles, including League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Halo, Starcraft, and Diablo. The studio promises an accessible yet difficult-to-master game.

The studio will be brewing up pints of fun when Bierzerkers hops on to Steam Early Access on Thor’s Day, July 9th. Do some KEGel exercises to prepare. Or just watch the game’s trailer below.

  • This is really attractive. I wonder when companies will finally be able to make games that look like well done cartoons, because all of the micro details on screen I find distracting. In movies things can be framed so that you know where to focus your attention, but in fast paced games like this there is no framing, and it’s all just overwhelming, sensory overload. It turns every genre into bullet hell.
