Klei Entertainment’s hit roguelike game Don’t Starve will receive an update adding cooperative multiplayer late this summer, according to a post by Joe Wreggelsworth on the Klei’s official forums.

The multiplayer expansion is named Don’t Starve: Together and currently looks like it will support four-player-co-op multiplayer, though Klei is looking into allowing more than four players, for both public and private games. Wreggelsworth wrote that most, if not all, of Don’t Starve’s features will be coming to Together, as well as possibly new features.

The post also revealed that Don’t Starve was initially created specifically without multiplayer in mind so that the single player campaign could be as good as possible.

“We promised we would make Don’t Starve the best single player game that we could,” Wreggelsworth said in the forum post. “To us, this meant using the resources that we had allocated to Don’t Starve and keeping them focused on delivering on that promise. We were not willing to sacrifice our goals for the game to work on a multiplayer version. This was the point we tried to get across in our our original decision.”

Wreggelsworth goes on to talk about how community interest in a multiplayer mode was high, and how Klei began experimenting with bringing it to Don’t Starve.

“Over the past few months, we’ve quietly smuggled in some new people onto our team who immediately said “Heck yeah, this can be a thing!” and actually threw together a proof of concept,” Wreggelsworth said. “After a couple months and an office-wide session of multiplayer Don’t Starve, we were convinced it was worth exploring and bringing it to our community.”

Those who already own the Steam or standalone version of Don’t Starve will receive a free upgrade to Don’t Starve: Together. Around when Together’s alpha becomes available, Don’t Starve’s price will increase from $14.99 to $19.99. It’s currently unknown if or when multiplayer features could arrive on the PlayStation 4 version of Don’t Starve.

For those not interested in playing the new multiplayer mode, Klei has said that the single player campaign “will not be affected by the addition of multiplayer except for content or features not specifically related to multiplayer gameplay.”
