Unity Pro, the premium version of Unity’s development kit is being offered free of charge to all members of the ID@Xbox developer initiative.

Normally charged at a set fee, Unity Pro will be available to all participants of the ID@Xbox program who have an Xbox One development kit.

Conversely, folks who already have a Unity Pro license will be provided Xbox One support at no extra cost.

A popular technology in indie game development, Unity has been instrumental in Microsoft’s re-invigoration of the Xbox One’s indie line-up. Games that currently employ the popular middleware include Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Cuphead and Ori and the Blind Forest (pictured).

Furthermore, a statement on the official Unity blog confirms that while the current version of Unity on Xbox One is Unity 4.3, the leap will be made to version 5.0; ignoring all the iterations in between.

Despite the recommendation however, support for version 4.3 will continue into 2015 in order to support developers who have a product already built to the current version of the software.

“As with some of the other new platforms, Xbox One will not support Unity 4.5 but instead will jump directly to Unity 5.0”, a reads statement on the Unity blog.

Adding further, “Unity 5.0 will eventually be our recommended version for all Xbox One development, however, we will continue to make updates for the Unity 4.3 version of the product including XDK upgrades into 2015 to ensure teams that have already built to this version of the product can ship.”
