Axiom Verge, a 2D MetroidVania-style game, will release on PlayStation 4 on March 31 for $19.99, with a Cross-Buy PS Vita version planned to release shortly after.

Sole developer of Axiom Verge Tom Happ announced the release date along with his reasoning for releasing the PS4 version before the Vita’s was finished on the PlayStation Blog today.

“After hearing from so many people who are eagerly looking forward to playing it, I decided just to launch the PS4 version first,” Happ said. “But people who are mostly interested in the Vita version should not worry. It’s definitely coming, and it’s definitely going to be cross-buy, so if you buy it on PS4, it will be ready for download on your Vita as soon as it launches there.”

Happ also detailed certain powerup abilities that allows players to bypass obstacles in Axiom Verge, though he only talked about the first few to avoid ruining the fun of players discovering them as they play.

Axiom Verge is about a scientist named Trace who dies in a laboratory accident, only to wake up in a dangerous, alien world. Happ said that the game is partially inspired by classics like Super Metroid, Blaster Master and Contra. He also said that the gameplay is a mix of “exploration, hidden powerups, strange creatures to fight, and epic boss battles.”
