In an attempt to honor the stories and artwork of independent gaming companies, writers Stace Harman and John Robertson have announced a Kickstarter to fund “a deluxe hardback book that chronicles the experiences and vivid design of over twenty of the world’s most revered and renowned independent developers.” While far from the first book to be written about the history and experience of interactive entertainment in the past decade, Independent By Design sets itself apart by focusing on many of the smaller indie developers that have left their mark on the industry, despite existing in an age of multi-million dollar AAA blockbusters. Included in this list of game developers are Frictional Games (Amnesia: The Dark Descent), Subset Games (F.T.L.), 11 Bit Studios (This War Of Mine), The Chinese Room (Dear Esther), and many other darlings of the Indie scene. In addition to these profiles, Independent By Design will also contain several standalone interviews with video game personalities, such as Devolver Digital’s Graeme Struthers and former Naughty Dog Lead Game Designer Richard Lemarchand.
