After the mind-shattering, eye-popping announcement of the Final Fantasy 7 remake at Sony’s 2015 E3 press conference, publisher Devolver Digital showed off some literal eye-popping and mind-shattering with the ultra-violent beat ’em up Mother Russia Bleeds.

Developed by Paris-based Le Cartel Studio, the game takes place in an alternate U.S.S.R. where the drug-addicted characters break out of prison to exact revenge against the Soviets. With a logo featuring a sickle and a syringe, narcotics figure heavily into the gameplay as the player must seek quick fixes from the veins of their fallen opponents.

Following in its arcade forefather’s footsteps, Mother Russia Bleeds allows its players to brawl the game’s gimps, ghouls, and grizzly bears solo or with three other players. The game also features retro, coin-op pixel art, precisely detailing the prisons, S&M nightclubs, and human-testing labs encompassing the game’s trashy visage of Russia.

Russian goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov would lose his mind if he saw a bear outside the forest.

Unsurprisingly, Mother Russia Bleeds taps into the manic, hallucinatory ’80s vibe of its Devolver Digital cousin, Hotline Miami, promising similar harrowing twists in its narrative. Though where Dennaton’s masterwork looks towards Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, Mother Russia Bleeds seems more reminiscent of the director’s other Ryan Gosling-led film, Only God Forgives.

Mother Russia Bleeds won’t be arriving on PS4 and PC until 2016, but in the meantime, check out the gameplay trailer for the game below. Be warned, though, the footage is not for the squeamish.
