Jake Kaufman, composer of games including Shovel Knight, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, and Contra IV, has announced on Twitter that there will be an official soundtrack release for Plague of Shadows, the upcoming expansion to Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight. This will surely be music to the ears of Kaufman fans, as Shovel Knight’s chiptune embracing soundtrack was a source of shovel loads of the praise the game received.

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows will be a 100% free expansion for all Shovel Knight owners. Here, you’ll get to play as Plague Knight, the villainous alchemist from the main quest. An official trailer for the expansion was released last week, which featured a new piece of music, which appeared to be subtly influenced by the work of Danny Elfman, possibly teasing a slightly darker tone for the music in the new expansion.

Like most of Kaufman’s soundtracks, the Plague of Shadows album will be available to download free from his Bandcamp page. The soundtrack to Shovel Knight also featured two tracks written by Megaman composer, Manami Matsumae, although there’ve been no announcements so far as to whether Matsumae will return for the expansion. No official release date has been announced, although the trailer does confirm that the expansion will be coming “soon.” How soon is soon? For Shovel Knight fans, it could never be soon enough.
